Jun10 - Castles

One weekend Lisa and I decide to be adventurous and take a drive and see a handful of England's finest castle.  If I had to learn to drive on the wrong side of the road, this was much easier then I though until I saw a vehicle following me flashing his lights - guess I was driving on the wrong side for nearly 10 minutes before I realized my mistake.

First stop was Durham, visited both the Castle and the Minster - nice town, gigantic buildings, traffic was a nightmare (went on 'castle' day) but we found Durham very nice and quaint.

Next we headed out to Hadrian's Wall which was a line of defense built by the Romans to keep the Scots out of England.  Who would have thought that there are Roman ruins in England - well there are and there are a large number of Roman ruin sites all around.

For the night we stayed in Otterburn Castle which has been renovated into a bed-and-breakfast.  Wonderful place, friendly staff and terrific food - hated to leave but wanted to see as many castles as possible.

Sunday morning, we headed to Alnwick Castle which is famous for being the castle used in the Harry Potter films... was rainy so we did not visit the gardens but did explore the entire castle which was gigantic

After Alnwick Castle we headed north to Bamburgh Castle which is on the English coast overlooking the North Sea.  Weather was extremely cold but the castle was in good shape... by far one of the finest castles we visited since it was well restored and wonderful for walking inside and out of the main gates.
